The Beginnings of Frozen Yogurt

By Heidi Ball

If you are craving ice cream, but want something a little healthier, turning to frozen yogurt just might be a great option.

Frozen yogurt is similar to ice cream in the sense that the textures and flavors are a lot alike. While sherbet and ice cream have been around for quite some time, frozen yogurt seems to be making a nice entrance to the world of frozen confections.

Frozen desserts have been around for thousands of years. "Water ice" was originally made in Asia. Also, Roman text shows us that their Emperor was treated to fruit juices that were made with "cold with mountain snow". Eventually, "water ices" were introduced to Italy and the popularity was spread through all of Europe.

It has since become easier to make such frozen desserts with the introduction of freezers. The first hand-freezer was brought forth in 1848. Modifications were made and finally the ease of making frozen desserts was widespread.

While ice cream itself has many different flavor options, frozen yogurt is catching up as well. Manufactures refine their recipes, making it not only a tasty treat, but perfect for those that are watching their calorie intake. With its creamy texture and tangier flavor than that of ice cream, it is making a name for itself in many eating establishments and fast becoming an increasingly popular treat. It's so popular in fact that many ice cream manufacturers have added frozen yogurt to their long list of items they make.

With everyone looking for low calorie options, it is nice to have something with a distinct pleasurable taste that even those not watching their waste line can enjoy. Being that it is sold in easy to take home containers just as ice cream, the decision to choose a frozen yogurt dessert over ice cream is an easy one. No need to give up flavor and just as satisfying, frozen yogurt is a great treat and a fantastic addition to the frozen dessert family.

What Exactly is Greek Yoghurt?

You may have recently heard about a "new" food Greek Yogurt and wondered what all the fuss is about. Is it better for you? How does it taste? What is so special about Greek yogurt? Let's take a look at this food and compare it to it's American counterpart.

Yogurt basics:

This is a common food, a dairy product produced by bacterial fermentation of milk. Fermentation of the milk sugar (lactose) produces lactic acid, which acts on milk protein to give it its texture and its characteristic tang. It is nutritionally rich in protein, calcium, riboflavin, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12.

Yogurt has nutritional benefits beyond those of milk: people who are moderately lactose-intolerant can enjoy yogurt without ill effects, because the lactose in the milk precursor is converted to lactic acid by the bacterial culture. The reduction of lactose bypasses the affected individuals' need to process the milk sugar themselves.

The Battle Between Frozen Yogurt and Ice Cream

It's official that the frozen yogurt craze has taken over America. With any craze, however, there are always going to be the skeptics. So what is it about it that makes it so appealing to today's society? Has America replaced traditional ice cream?

A lot of people have been turning to yogurt shops for their cool desserts because of the go-green mentality that most yogurt shops are purveying. People in America are starting to realize that going green is actually benefiting the environment and look to do business with companies that respect the environment as well. A lot of yogurt companies work to go green with their shops so customers are naturally attracted to getting their fix there.

Fro-Yo, as it is sometimes referred to, cuts the calories down by a great deal also. Even if you were to get a small ice cream from Cold Stone, you would still be putting down over 400 calories just in that one dessert. A small non-fat frozen yogurt is only 100 calories. It appeals to the health-conscious buyer, and it's great to see Americans becoming more and more health conscious.

It also appeals to the dairy-sensitive stomach. Many people who usually feel very sick eating ice cream feel completely fine after downing a frozen yogurt. Although it is still made with dairy products, a lot of the time the amount of dairy to water base ratio is much less than that of ice cream. If dairy products like ice cream make your stomach sick, try to find a venue that has a more icy based selection of fro-yo.

When considering the health benefits of frozen yogurt versus ice cream most people immediately look at fat and sugar content. It’s true, not all frozen yogurt is fat free and some can be high in sugar content, however there are several healthy frozen yogurts available, such as Yogurt Bar’s organic frozen yogurts that are non-fat and low calorie. But what about the additional health benefits of frozen yogurt? Surely fat and sugar content is not all there is to consider.

One major health benefit of all natural frozen yogurts is the probiotic content. Frozen yogurt that contains live bacterial cultures promotes better digestion.

Frozen Yogurt Recipe from Rachel Ray

Acai Berry Smoothies

The Ingredients in Acai Smoothies

· Acai fruit powder or juice

· One Banana

· Milk or soy milk

· Vanilla frozen yogurt

· Blender

How to prepare Acai Smoothies

· Pick a standard acai berry juice like mona vie or Bom Dia. In case you pick out a powder, go for Acai Gogo.

· Take 1 cup of acai juice or maybe 1 portion of acai powder and add it to the blender.

· Pour a cup of soy milk in this. This solely depends on your choice & taste. In case you opt for milk, preferable go for the low fat or the non fat milk.

· Slice the full banana into the mix. This would add a sweet flavor and give the drink a creamy texture. Banana is packed with potassium that strengthens your bones and increases the energy levels.

· Now add 1/2 a cup of vanilla flavored frozen yogurt. This also be substituted for low fat frozen yogurt.

· Blend it for around 20 to 30 seconds.

· Pour this into a glass and enjoy the smoothie.

Components of Frozen Yogurt

Frozen yogurt has a distinct, tangy flavor from that of ice cream. While both ice cream and frozen yogurt are dairy products, the later of the two has a unique flavor because of the cultures that yogurt contains.

Frozen yogurt and ice cream are made in much the same way with many of the same ingredients. The main difference, besides the yogurt culture added to frozen yogurt, is the fact that it needs water and air. Added to the mix, air creates volume. Water is added to help the yogurt achieve a partially solid state. Frozen yogurt is never completely frozen; rather it simply contains ice crystals.

Again, like ice cream, the biggest component to frozen yogurt is milk. The difference between the two lies in the amount of Milk fat. Milk fat lends a rich taste to the two and is where the "creamy" texture comes in to play. In frozen yogurt, milk solids not the fat make up a good portion of it.
